This Sunday, I want to share some of useful things you can do just with a click of your mouse (or two) (or a right-click).
The amount people use the mouse is very much a personal preference. I don’t use it much, as I prefer my keyboard shortcuts, and don’t like moving my hands back and forth. It’s exhausting. For many, though, the mouse is an incredibly useful tool.
Here’s ten things you can do with your mouse other than just open applications (also Windows-based, but usually with Mac counterparts):
1. Email a link- Right-click any link, and select “send-to”. Up comes your default email editor, with the link in the body of the email.
2. Select a word- Double-clicking a word selects it. Then do with it what you will.
3. Select a paragraph- Anywhere within a paragraph, click 3 times. It will select the whole paragraph.
4. Search Google- Right click a word, or selection of words. In Firefox or Chrome (and maybe others), select “Search Google”. Up will come a Google search for your word or words.
5. View the Source Code- Source Code is what makes up the page you’re looking at, both the content and the style. Select part of a page, or click on a blank part, and select either “view selection source” or “view page source” to see what’s going on under the hood.
6. Maximize/Restore- In a browser or application window, double-clicking the title bar at the very top will maximize the window. Do it again, and it restores to its previous size.
7. Drag and Drop to Compile- Open a blank Microsoft Word, Notepad, etc. document. Then, find a document, and drag it into the blank document. It will put the text of the document into Word, as a new document. Great for compiling two or many different documents into one.
8. Copy/Move/Shortctut- When you move something in Windows, do it while holding down the right mouse button. When you try to drop it, you’ll have options to either “move here”, “copy here”, or “create shortcut here”. No more copying and pasting files, or having duplicates when you don’t want to, just drag with the right click.
I’ve just scratched the surface here, but these are a few of the time-saving mouse features I use most.
How do you use your mouse? How does it save you time? Let us know in the comments.
