As much as I love to cook, following recipes is a pain. Trying to figure out how things are supposed to work, in what order you’re supposed to do things, or what the heck “julienne” means.
That’s one of the reasons I love to watch cooking shows: it helps you figure out how to do certain things, how real chefs make the food they make, and why their cake comes out nice and fluffy while mine has the appearance and consistency of a wet rock.
And as YouTube is to television, so is FoodTube to cooking shows.
FoodTube works just like YouTube- you can search for videos by tag or title, and then watch videos along with other related videos. Search by ingredient, type of food (like “smoothie”), or exactly what you want (like “mango smoothie”). The videos are usually step-by-step, but vary in their ease of use because it’s all user-created.
Uploading videos works just like YouTube as well, in an incredibly simple process. When you upload, you’re given a list of categories to choose from, so searchers are able to narrow it down. The process is easy, and it’s a great way to start your own mini-cooking show. There’s a “Channels” feature, which actually does let you host your own show that others can follow.
In addition to the videos, FoodTube plays hosts to a forum (which is mostly spam, in my experience) and groups devoted to people interested in certain types of cooking or cuisine. The groups are my favorite part of the site, allowing you to see some of the best videos and discussion around a particular food-related topic.
FoodTube’s a neat way to learn how to cook and find cool recipes, though my hunch is that it would be more popular if it were connected to, or even part of, YouTube.
